Comedian Wanda Sykes sat down with Piers Morgan to talk about her career. And the conversation quickly moved to her being gay. Wanda Sikes totally shocked me when she stated that, since she came out about her sexuality, it is harder for her to be gay than it is to be black. First, I don't think that you can compare being gay to being black...it is like comparing apples and oranges. Some may argue that being gay is a choice, however, I am willingly to concede that God creates each being with a purpose in mind and He created them the way He wanted and for His purpose. Some homosexuals feel, from a very early age, that they are homosexual and they can't follow the traditional sexual union blueprint; and I can't dispute that either. However, I do believe that all people have the choice in the way that we choose to express or sexuality... Black people don't have that choice. I can't decide, when I wake up, that I don't want to be black anymore and change my skin color; Bbecause visually I am easily identified and can't go undetected whether I want to or choose to. I believe Ms. Sikes was very careless with her words and didn't consider other options before making this statement. Maybe Ms. Sikes career is going well because she isn't as funny as she thinks she is; or maybe the content of her material is offensive to others. Or finally, maybe it is a combination of her sexuality, race and gender. According to sources, it is very hard for any female, black or white, to make it in comedic circles; and discrimination based on race and sexuality is not uncommon in those circles either. Ms. Sikes was very reckless with her statements and in the future, before she makes excuses as to why her career is not soaring, she should seriously evaluate her career and other reasons why she is not as successful as she strives to be before she makes controversial statements like that. What do you think?
